Deciding on the right cake design, the flavours to compliment your menu, and the perfect designer to make your wedding cake can seem like a daunting task - right? Worry not - Fond of Cakes is here to help. In this blog, I've split each element down into manageable chunks for you to digest at leisure. I'll tell you the right time to engage with me, what to bring to your tasting consultation, and what to expect from your cake designer.
6-9 months before your wedding: make your initial enquiry
During your enquiry, tell me of any must-haves, design ideas, inspirational cakes you've seen, elements you'd like to include, and the theme you'll be having. These could include:
Colour inspirations
Fabric/colour swatches
Invitations
Photos of cakes you like
Lace or any other samples
Magazine tear-sheets
Tagged images from weddings or floral design books
Wedding blog images or individual blogs of floral professionals
Pinterest items
The wedding invitation
Photos of the venue
If you're unsure of a design and want something completely new, don't worry, I'll happily guide you and design a cake from scratch based on your budget and theme; using inspiration around me to create a bespoke alternative.
Choosing the right flavours When choosing flavours, think, what are your favourite ice creams or desserts? Is there anything you'd like to try from my flavour menus? I'd like to have your top five favourite flavours ready when we meet, and, of course, some for you to take home.
4-6 months before your wedding: Schedule your cake tasting
This is your chance to discuss overall design, confirm your flavours and any other details, such as timings on the day. I'll tell you what's readily available, such as fresh fruit, depending on the season of your wedding. And, what's more, we can discuss flavour combinations, any special dietary requirements, and how your cake compliments your dinner menu. I'll then leave you to try a selection of my flavours.
3-4 months before your wedding: choose a design and place your order
I'd like to think I know a little about you by now. After your tasting, I'll send you my design/s, along with quotes for each. Once you're happy with a design and price, this is the right time to place your order. Remember - you can make changes at any time up to 3 weeks before your wedding or before work starts.
I'll also happily source and hire cake stands for you and talk to your caterer, wedding planner and florist (should you have them) to arrange everything from here.
I hope this guide helps to relieve any concerns you may have when planning your wedding cake and I very much look forward to meeting you.
